Dr. Joshua Smith
Josh is the Director of Research and Development at Prosono, where he is responsible for growing new business lines and supporting clients at the intersection of Renewable Energy and Finance. He specializes in translating technologies into business models, with a background in engineering and private equity.
Josh previously supported early-stage companies to develop and implement their go-to-market and fundraising strategies, and still sits on the board of two startups. He also advised Investment Banks and Investment Managers on renewable energy sector transactions. Josh also served as a Director and Investment Committee member at Manna Tree Partners, managing portfolio companies and firm operations.
Before that, Josh held technical and leadership roles at Audi AG and NIO developing autonomous electric vehicles. Key achievements at Audi include patenting early EV battery thermal technologies and testing methods, strategic fleet drivetrain planning enabling increased EV volumes, and leading the North American technical product marketing efforts. At NIO, Josh lead the Advanced Powertrain Engineering Department including the development of various electric drive units, Silicon-Carbide power electronics, battery systems, and electronic architectures for dedicated autonomous electric vehicle platforms. Josh also lead the cabin and vehicle thermal teams, including the development of multiple machine-learning enabled range-saving and cabin comfort features. He also served on the senior management team focused on external business development activities and strategic requirements planning.
Josh holds a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Braunschweig (Germany), publishing a thesis on electric vehicle battery system thermal management. He also holds a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder, specialized in renewable energy systems. Josh enjoys volunteering his time as a youth ski coach and spending time outdoors with his family.
